Mat Pilates and reformer Pilates share one philosophy: controlled movement, breath, and work through the deep muscles. The difference is the equipment and what it gives you.
The resistance
On the mat, the resistance is your own bodyweight and gravity. On the reformer it comes from springs you can adjust. That means you can make an exercise lighter or harder without changing the exercise itself.
The support
The springs and the platform give support and direction. So the reformer is often more approachable for beginners and for people returning after an injury: the movement is clearer and more stable. The mat relies entirely on your control, which is a challenge, but a useful one.
Which one for whom
The mat is convenient, portable and almost free (you only need a mat). The reformer gives more variety, support and measurable load. Many people do both. If you are starting now and want clarity and support, the reformer is a calm place to begin.
